Our First Hackathon Story!

Analytics & Machine Learning Hackathon

Our 2 day Analytics & Machine Learning Hackathon went off with a bang! Over 50 students from RMIT, University of Melbourne, Deakin University and Monash University turned up with their laptops in hand and game face on. Teams were challenged to build solutions to real Telstra business problems using analytics, statistics, data science and machine learning.

There were $2000 worth of prizes up for grabs which we had the pleasure of giving away.

Each team was given access to a dataset, Telstra SMEs, specialised software and an RMIT academic from the School of Science (Computer Science and Software Engineering).

Day 1:

Teams formed and the action started. Everyone was hard at work getting through the datasets, understanding the problem and working through a solution.

Day 2:

Teams were asked to pitch their solutions in front of the whole cohort. Five judges reviewed the solutions and awarded 2 teams equal first: The results were impressive.  Well done, to our 2 winning teams, Sayoni and Ivy and Adelbert and Yong!

The competition really was tough and the other teams did amazing jobs pitching their solutions to all of us.

We’d like to thank StrEAT catering for the great food and for OzHarvest Melbourne for rescuing any leftovers and making sure no food went to waste. We’d also like to thank all the staff from Telstra who donated 2 days to the event, Dr. Jeffrey Chan from RMIT University, Mathworks, Tableau and to RMIT Activator for the wonderful facility.

Look out for upcoming events. Go to STEM Academy or our FB page @stemhubaus.
